Be Encouraged
by Rusty Stowe - Senior Adult Minister
For the past few weeks, in our Adult Sunday School lessons, we have been studying passages out of 1st and 2nd Peter. Passages that we need to read concerning several Biblical truths. Back on April 27 we saw the importance of being “prepared” to handle the ridicule and suffering we may experience to be a believer in Christ. Then we looked at being “humble” and displaying the spirit of humility with each other and God. On May 11, we were reminded of the importance of being well-equipped as we grow in our faith and as we learn to share Jesus with others. In 2 Peter 2:1-3 we were reminded that we should always be “alert” concerning false teachers and the division they sow. The last lesson was to me a great lesson on being an “ENCOURAGER” as we live in these days of anticipation of Jesus’ return.
I have written articles before about the importance of “encouraging” one another but the fact is everyone needs a pat on the back and a good positive word from time to time. Peter was telling us that most of us spend a great deal of our time waiting for something good to happen. Waiting for a new baby or grandbaby to be born! Waiting for a much-needed vacation! Waiting for the OKC Thunder to announce they are world champions! WAITING – it is something most of us fail at.
This lesson reminded us that we as believers are to live in expectation (actively waiting) for the return of Jesus Christ. We are to devote ourselves to holy living as we wait. And we are to guard ourselves against false teachers by being intentional about growing in our knowledge of the Lord.
Being an “encourager” is an active lifestyle. You develop it day by day as you put into practice finding people who need a good, positive word from you. You must make a plan to reach out and touch someone with a positive word of encouragement.
Peter concluded this 2nd letter with a challenge to all of us to “grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ.”
May we all be “encouraged” with the words of Peter.
