Finding Rest
by Chris Watkins - Student Pastor
Matthew 11:28-30
I don’t know about everyone else, but when summer rolls around on the calendar it seems like it should bring rest, trips to the beach or mountains, a lot of watermelon slices, and cones of ice cream. However, for many of us summer is a busy season full of work, volunteering, overseeing multiple family members' calendars and doctor visits for some things I probably don't want to know about. When life gets busy, or even more busy than it already was a few short days ago.. We have to make sure to prioritize rest. I know we all feel the need for rest, but do we actually make sure we get it?
When I’m talking about rest, I do not mean we need to become slothful or make rest more important than all other things in our lives, but we do see God prioritize rest. We see in the creation story that God took day 7 to rest and reflect. In our lives, we need to find that Sabbath rest. The question is how do we find rest? I think the answer is more simple than we realize. Look at the start of Psalm 23,
1 The Lord is my shepherd;
I have what I need.
2 He lets me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside quiet waters.
There are many instances we see the Lord bringing our attention to rest. While we may still be going, going, going and doing, doing, doing this summer it is important that we still find rest mentally, physically, but most importantly spiritually. One place to look at for spiritual rest is Matthew 11:28-30 which says,
28 “Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Jesus would love for you to find rest this season in Him. I am looking forward to the opportunities God has before us to serve Him together, whether at VBS, Super Summer, Cross Timbers, and/or Falls Creek. God is going to do incredible things and I hope He will help you see some of these things happen. My encouragement would be to reflect on the Lord after the events and see how God was molding and shaping you, or how he moved in the life of someone around you or in our community. Rest in the Lord, turn over the things that are burdening you (including your busy schedule) and allow Him to give you rest.
