Football Season

by Chris Watkins - Student Minister

As football season is around the corner I wanted to check into see how everyone is doing? Are we getting prepared for the season, are we looking through the rosters, asking ourselves if the coaches are ready for the season? Maybe we have even gone to the extremes to pray for a great season and maybe that a miracle could happen and our teams could make the newly instituted playoff at the end of the college season or that the Dallas Cowboys somehow make it to the Super Bowl.

All this is fun and we are even getting ready for the Fantasy Football season to start here soon. (Not too late to sign up! Sign up here, deadline is Sunday, 8/25 at 10pm)

With the anticipation of a new football season on the college and NFL level, this also means that we have Friday Night Lights kicking off here in our communities soon. I am looking forward to being in the stands with y'all on Friday nights as we cheer on the Broncos! Did you know that we have the opportunity each season to feed the Mustang Bronco varsity football team each season for one of their team meals? Not only do we get to feed the team, but we get to share the gospel. Coach Blankenship has the team meet each week at a local church, and he allows one of the ministers to stand before the team and share Jesus. I believe this is one of the many things that Coach does that sets our young men up for success in the program. Coach doesn’t just ask for a Bible story to motivate the guys like David and Goliath, Coach genuinely wants us to preach Jesus to these guys. He even goes as far as allowingthe youth pastors to attend practices and spend time with the guys to build relationships.

I share these things to ask for your prayers during the season. I share these things to remind ourselves that the players on the field are not there for us to complain that they did not score or to make us feel any certain way. The players on the field are just students that have a whole lot of things going on in their lives, and get to spend some time playing a game that they love. Some of the guys are playing with expectation of going to the next level, but many know this is for the here and now.

My request is that we as a church pray that these football players, managers, trainers and coaches have the opportunity to clearly hear the Gospel, not only at Chisholm Heights, but every week.

Pray that Coach would continue to lead the guys well, not just on the football field but also as he takes young men from various walks of life and tries to point them in the right direction. (If you did not know Coach is actually a Sunday School teacher on Sunday Mornings for 12th grade guys at FBC Mustang)

Pray that all of our coaches will continue to lead their families well. Being a coach is not easy on your family life as it involves many hours sacrificially away from their families.

Pray for protection over our team and community.

This past spring was a difficult season to process for our students and community. Pray that God would continue to strengthen our resolve to live each day for His glory and not our own.

I am eager for the football season to get here, probably more than most, but I know that I also need to make sure that the football season is not an idol and that my focus must be on the Lord and how he can move through the season with our teams and opportunities to meet new people and share about Jesus and our church.

Go Broncos! Go CHBC! Go God!

Chris
